12 Smart & Savvy Days of Christmas - Day 11 - My Favorite Bloggers Part 2

Hi there! Welcome to Day 11. Today I welcome three more of my favorite bloggers to the blog that I have met on this blogging journey who have become great friends! Kaitlan from Between Order and Randomness, Christine from I *Heart* Big Books and Ethan from One Guy's Guide To Good Reads

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

How long have you been blogging?

I've had my blog for a couple of years.  It started out as a personal blog. Then about a year ago I started book blogging.

How/why did you get started?

I started book blogging because of Cora Carmack. I started reading her books. Became a part of her All Lined Up Street Team. And everything took off from there. I was introduced to so many wonderful people of the book world. I was just sucked right in and I've never been happier.

What is your favorite thing about blogging?

All the wonderful relationships that have come out of it. Helping to promote some truly amazing and talented people. It brings me so much joy.

In the spirit of the holiday season:

What is your funniest holiday memory?

Hmm...ohh! I will never forget the one year. This is kind of embarrassing but I'll tell anyway. My mother one year through it would be funny to wrap my bras in with all my other presents. So when I opened the box in front of everyone. I was mordified. Looking back I can laugh at it, but at the time my face was as red as a tomato. Haha.

Favorite Christmas/Holiday:

Song?

Suzy Snowflake and I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas.
Food?

The mini cheesecakes that my mom makes every year. They are the best!
Movie/TV special?

Favorite movie is Muppets Christmas Carol and Favorite TV special is A Charlie Brown Christmas.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

How long have you been blogging?

I'm just coming up on my two year (TWO YEARS!) blog anniversary in a couple of weeks! I can't believe time has passed so quickly, but if it's one thing I've learned....this book community is amazing, fun, and completely welcoming. I have big giveaway plans in store as a thank you to my readers!

How/why did you get started?

I actually had another short-lived blog incarnation before i*Heart*BigBooks was born. But what got me started was reading Hopeless by Colleen Hoover. That book just wrecked me and I had no one to talk to about all of my *FEELS*. I then turned to the internet and though I was already aware of the online book community, I had the undeniable urge to become a more active participant within it.

What is your favorite thing about blogging?

This year was a bit rough on me with life and my day job, so I've been a bad blogger. I have big plans to get back on track next year, but through it all I've loved designing graphics within the book world. I'm not always the most eloquent person with my words, but I love the art of visual expression! Also, I love to share in my love of reading. When a blog reader tells me that they loved a book I recommended or when they ask me for personalize recommendations? That's one of the best feelings ever. And lastly, a most importantly....My FAVORITE thing about blogging is meeting and getting to know the most amazing, creative, passionate people. I've made some amazing friends in this community that just "GET" me. We don't always agree, but we respect and care for one another, all without ever meeting in person (though I hope to remedy this!) They are my people and I'm never ever giving them back!

In the spirit of the holiday season:

What is your funniest holiday memory?

Oh....probably the time I was little and was travelling to the east coast. I saw a squirrel for the first time. Unfortunately, this meeting took place as it was climbing my leg. I can laugh about it now that I didn't get infected with rabies. Wow. Didn't think my interview would mention rabies, now did you?

Favorite Christmas/Holiday:

Song?

All I Want for Christmas is You always makes me happy. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas just gives me the warm fuzzies. hahah

Food?

Desserts. All of them.

Movie/TV special?

Elf and It's a Wonderful Life. My Christmas is incomplete without the laughter and then the tears of those two movies. I also try to make time for White Christmas as well. But the first two are my essentials!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

How long have you been blogging?

I began my blogging journey in March of 2014. I haven't been at this for very long, but I feel like I've been doing it my entire life!

How/why did you get started?

This is a fantastic question that I get asked often. I love reading. I love all things literature, in fact. I was growing increasingly aggravated at how the literary world was dominated by women. Not that that is a bad thing, but authors were getting no insight from male readers. Do you realize that almost exactly half of the world's population is comprised of males? And guess what, we like reading too! I just wanted to make that known to authors. I loved being a male blogger in a female dominated community, because I get to express my views and talk about the differences I see in novels not only because of my gender, but because of my background, location, etc as well. I actually got started through being selected as a member of NYT Bestselling Author Cora Carmack's Street Team. As a member of her Street Team, I was surrounded by lots of amazing bloggers who inspired me to finally begin a blog of my own! This is, of course where I met the incredible awesome and talented Steph! :D

What is your favorite thing about blogging?

My favorite thing about blogging is the incredible feeling I get from helping an indie or debut author. I am a big fan of connecting, in some way, with each author I work with. Be it an email or even a RT on Twitter, I love knowing that authors can see my words. It's such a great feeling to get acknowledgment from authors and readers for the work we put into our blogs. It isn't east, but it is definitely more rewarding than words can say. I also have come to love all of the friendships I have made in this community. The friends I am making through blogging have become some of the best I have ever had!

In the spirit of the holiday season:

What is your funniest holiday memory?

Funniest? Geez... Well, I'm not sure about funniest, but I have one that definitely sticks out as an "only Ethan" moment. Back in High School, I was editor of the Yearbook. Each year we hosted a formal Christmastime dance, and as editor, I played a big role in making it happen. The dance went off without a hitch, and that night we got our first taste of winter weather. Definitely an exciting thing where I'm from because we didn't always get snow. Well anyway, early the next morning I woke up and got ready to go to the school to begin the de-construction process of the dance. In my excitement to see snow, I ran out the front door and immediately slipped on the ice that had accumulated on our front porch. After falling off said porch, it should come without shock that I didn't have to help take down the dance... In fact, I had to spend the next 6 weeks in a cast after I broke my ankle! Some way to spend your holiday, right?! Definitely wasn't funny at the time, but now I can laugh on it!

Favorite Christmas/Holiday:

Song?

Oh man... 'Where are you Christmas?' by Faith Hill is my all time favorite, but 'Mary's Boy Child' comes in at a close second. More traditionally? 'Silent Night' or 'O Holy Night', for sure.

Food?

White chocolate covered pretzels probably. This is a hard question! OH, no. Those Crunch Bar medallions that you can only get around Christmastime? THOSE are my favorite!

Movie/TV special?

I am a stickler for The Grinch, the live action one with Jim Carrey. BUT My favorite holiday classics are the Rankin/Bass productions of the 60s and 70s. Those films are a national treasure. I watch them year round! Also, the Santa Clause movies with Elizabeth Mitchell, because YES. Love. That. Woman. Haha!

12 Smart & Savvy Days of Christmas - Day 10 - Guest Post from Downey Greene

Hello, hello! Today I welcome the lovely duo known as Downey Greene to the blog. They released their debut novel, Partners In Crime, last year. Welcome ladies!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Happy New Year everyone and thanks so much Steph for having us.

My New Years thoughts…

I am Downey of this dynamic duo.  We are new to this author thing and I have to say it has been a wild and sometimes daunting ride.  I have been in somewhat of a slump.  I for a wee bit seemed to let life, 2 jobs, 5 kids and so much more bog me down.  I have been on that crazy treadmill of life and temporarily lost my zest for writing and reading.  GASP…I said reading too.  READING…where it all began.

In the past week since the holidays have come and now are gone, I finally had a week to reflect on what is missing.  Besides the typical kid getting sick over the holiday, I have actually had some time to read and relax.  Gloriously read.  I have actually finished 3 books in less than a week.  I decided until Monday, I am going to binge read whatever tickles my fancy.  Not for my blog; Bitch Can Write A Book, not for any point but to bask in someone’s glorious story.   I have submerged myself into some really awesome reads.  And I am being reminded how much I adore the written word.  That of so many wonderful authors and writing it too.  That fire that had burned so bright is flickering again.  I am remembering how much reading then writing as helped me, has made me sane at times and most of all like so many, it has taken me all over the world on so many adventures.  It has made me ugly cry, laugh until it hurts and so much more.

So while I vowed this year to not make resolutions, instead I am making REAL SOLUTIONS.  One of them being to make time to remember what really makes me happy.  I will never be Nora Roberts AND BY THE WAY… I ADORE HER.  I need to stop comparing myself and my writing to anyone else.  I need to write and trust that what will be will be.   Also, I vow to get back to my blogging and recommending what I love, most of all…reading.  Taking that deep breath and diving into a book, relaxing and yes reveling in the journey that every book takes us on.

Thanks so much for listening to my thoughts for my New Year.  I love being a mom and a wife; I just have to make time to be Downey Greene and BCWAB too.  As my awesome writing partner said I hope you come and check us out on FB, and our cool new website. AND if you have not as of yet checked out our debut book, Partners In Crime, please do.

Happy New Year and more importantly, remember to do what you find joy in.

<3 Downey

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

So, Downey Greene’s a tad late on the uptake here for this holiday survey.  Apologies abound and all I can say, Greene that is, is what happens over the holidays stays over the holidays…LOL!

Because this is late, I am answering two questions…never let anyone say that I’m not a giver!  ;)

What are your MUST watch holiday movies/tv shows?

For me, Greene, the must watch holiday movies are of course and in no particular order:  Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer by Rankin Bass, who else?  Frosty the Snowman, narrated by none other than Jimmy Durante.  Twas the Night Before Christmas, Joel Grey and George Gobel as cartoons?  Awesome!  There’re are some little known animated features that my mother-in-law taped for my kids that aren’t shown which is sad to me because they are really good.  Jolly Old St. Nicholas, Babar and Father Christmas, Deck the Halls.  Then of course I have my two absolute much watches and these are specific as remakes have been made but none shall be as good as these two:  Miracle on 34th Street, the 1947 NON-colorized version with Maureen O’Hara, Natalie Wood, John Payne, and Edmund Gwenn as Kris Kringle.    Then there’s all time Christmas Classic, A Christmas Carol written by Charles Dickens.  The version of which I speak is the 1951 version with Alastair Sim as Ebenezer Scrooge.  There’s nothing like seeing that old curmudgeon dancing around in his night dress once he’s realized it’s Christmas day and he survived.  Many people might say I forgot It’s a Wonderful Life and while I do like that movie, it isn’t a MUST watch for me.

What three books would I take with me to a deserted island?  And why those books?

I’ve had to think about this for a bit, but for not too long.  So, again, in no particular order:

1. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling:  This book, I think, is really the best of the seven.  This book sets up the rest of the series more than the first two, in my opinion.  Also, this is the first book where Harry learns that Dumbledore, while powerful, cannot fix everything.  Harry’s life was rife with tragedy before this book, but since Hagrid found him on that solitary rock in the sea, Dumbledore has had his back, so to speak.  And don’t even get me started on the Dementors.  Depression symptoms personified.  Thank you J.K. Rowling for putting this surreal image of what depression and anxiety may look and feel like to those who are lucky enough to not suffer with these illnesses.  This book is the most entertaining, highly emotional, and foreboding.  It is definitely my favorite of the series.

2. A Song of Fire and Ice – A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin:  Unlike Prisoner of Azkaban, this book is the first in the series and is frackin’ brilliant.  The characters are rich and the description of the landscape simply beautiful.  I feel like I could hop a plane, if I had the money, and visit Westeros.  Fantasy at its finest.  The book is long, so if I were to be stranded for a while on that island, I’d definitely have time to read it.  This book, much like Prisoner of Azkaban, doesn’t really have a happy ending.  PoA ended on a happy note, but the foreboding of the coming evil was very present even at the end.  If you haven’t read or seen the series on HBO, I won’t post a spoiler.  All I’ll say is…Martin breaks many rules in the writing game…and I thank him for that!

3. Chances by Jackie Collins:  What can I say?  When I grow up I want to be Jackie Collins.  This is the first dirty book I can remember reading.  But it is much more than that.  This is the first book I remember getting mad at an author for killing a beloved character. *Side eyes Mr. Martin*  I still haven’t gotten over that tragedy…no matter how many you’ve written, Jackie Collins, I am not over that one.  Again, if you haven’t read the book or seen the made for TV movie, which ruined the characters, in my opinion, I won’t post a spoiler, just read it.  Also, Gino ‘The Ram’ Santangelo was my very first book boyfriend and as they say, you never forget your first.  There is no one like Gino.  Again, this is the first one in the Santangelo series.  I love Lucky, strong independent woman, sexy, takes what she wants without question or apology.  There’s a side character in this series of books that I remember well…or he could have come around in a subsequent book, but I will forever associate him with Lucky no matter in which book he was conceived, Boogie.  Lucky’s number one henchman…much like Boba Fett in Star Wars, he’s a side character who doesn’t get much “screen” time, but he made an impact on me.  Many of the men I write are modeled after Gino and Boogie…and quite possibly Boba Fett.  Have I mentioned I’m a Star Wars geek?

There’s no other reason I have chosen these books other than they’ve remained with me for one reason or another.  If I sat here long enough, I’m sure I could come up with about a thousand more books to choose but you’ve made me put my book memories under the microscope to see which ones are the most in focus.  At this time, these three made the grade.

Thank you so much for this.  It was really fun.  Hope to see ya’ll hanging around the Downey Greene Facebook page.  Have a happy new year.

12 Smart & Savvy Days of Christmas - Day 9 - Interview with Mandi Beck

Happy New Year! I hope yours was great. Did you make any resolutions, goals or plans for 2015? I've got a few in the works, both personally and professionally and can't wait to start working on them. For Day 9 today, debut author Mandi Beck stopped by for a fun interview. Welcome Mandi!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

What is your funniest holiday memory?

It’s not a Christmas memory but Thanksgiving. My brother in law came in (he wasn't my brother in  law yet) for Turkey day and I was cooking. Made the whole shebang, turkey, ham, sweet potatoes etc. Everyone is fixing their plates and the two Beck boys aren't taking sweet potatoes so I call them out on in and they immediately pile some on their plates. About half way through the meal they ask why I’m not eating any sweet potatoes to which I reply, “Ewww! I hate them!” They were so mad! LOL Apparently they  hate them too and were just trying to be polite! That was the last time that I made sweet potatoes for Thanksgiving.

What are your favorite Christmas traditions? Do you have any unique ones?

I love everything Disney! My Christmas tree (yes I call it “my”) is all Disney (white lights, black and red balls ala Mickey Mouse) so every year I buy everyone in our family a Disney ornament that we open on Christmas Eve along with our Christmas jammies and then we add the new ornaments to the tree. It’s my favorite part of Christmas. Unique huh? Not really. My family is Catholic Italians so we don’t eat meat on Christmas Eve. It’s all seafood and pasta for us. Then on Christmas morning we eat homemade sfogliatelle (flaky ricotta filled Italian pastry) while we drink our coffee and open our presents. It’s by far my favorite holiday.

What are your must watch holiday movies and/or Television specials?

I am totally crazy about the 25 days of Christmas on ABC family! I love Christmas movies! I love the new as well as the classics. I think that A Christmas Story is my number one must watch still though. I watch the marathon probably longer than I should!

Holiday music - love it or hate it and why?

I drive my husband CRAZY with holiday music! I am one of those a$$holes who starts playing it November first and doesn’t stop til Mid January at the earliest! I love everything about it!

What is the funniest and/or weirdest thing a reader has ever asked you?

Technically I don’t have readers yet, but when I get some, I’ll let you know ;)

Which book of yours would you want to see made into a movie or tv series and who would you want to play the lead roles?

Tough one! ;)  I’ll go with my debut because, one: It’s the only book I've written and two: I think it would make a pretty awesome movie! LOL I’m not biased or anything! I don’t know who I would have play my characters though! I have yet to find someone who fits the mold perfectly.

What are your must-haves when you write?  Do you have any quirks like something you like to eat or drink while writing?

I have to have coffee, seltzer water and I prefer Mambas but I have a hard time finding them so anything sweet and fruity will do! I also have to listen to music but it has to be through headphones and not the speakers because then it distracts me. Weird, I know.

What three books would you bring with you if you were stranded on a desert island?  Why those books?

I’d rather pick my favorite child than try to narrow it down to three books I can’t live without! LOL

12 Smart & Savvy Days of Christmas - Day 8 - Guest Post from MC Decker

Happy New Year! I'm a little late with the post, so apologies! I hope everyone had a great New Year's Eve and are enjoying the day. Today I welcome MC Decker to the blog and she's talking about her favorite Christmas specials. Welcome!!

Day 1 |Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 | Day 5 | Day 6 | Day 7 | Day 8

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Top Five Christmas Specials:

1). Christmas Eve on Sesame Street – This holiday special has been on my ‘must watch’ list since I was just a little girl. Who doesn’t love the banter between Oscar the Grouch and Big Bird about ‘how Santa will fit down that skinny little chimney?’ Big Bird decides to solve the mystery himself by asking Santa, but everyone else panics as they think Big Bird has gone missing. The conundrum of how Santa actually fits down the tiny chimney is never really solved, but Santa does deliver presents and everyone, including Big Bird, is reunited on Christmas Eve once again. The story includes all of the beloved Sesame Street characters including Cookie Monster, Grover, Kermit and Bert and Ernie. If you haven’t seen this classic Christmas special, which originally aired in 1978, I recommend it for children, of all ages.

2). Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas – I know, I know … You are all saying to yourself, ‘Where’s ‘Frosty the Snowman,’ ‘Rudolph,’ or ‘Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town.’ .. And, what is ‘Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas’?’ This little-known holiday special, which was created by Jim Henson, was also a childhood favorite. I remember watching our taped, from television, scratchy version year-after-year. I hadn’t seen the clever special which features Emmet and Ma Otter for several years when I suddenly came across the DVD while shopping a few years back.

I quickly snatched it up and it has become a staple in my holiday viewing collection once again. And, this time, it is commercial free! The story features Emmet and his mother who form a Jug-Band in hopes of winning a holiday contest in order to purchase each other Christmas presents. The two encounter many obstacles along the way, including losing the competition to The Riverbottom Nightmare Band, but in the end they are able to earn enough money to purchase their gifts. Like my first selection, this special also includes Kermit as the guest narrator. I mean, who doesn’t love a holiday special that includes Kermit?

3). A Garfield Christmas – No, this one doesn’t include Kermit, but it does feature that orange, lasagna-loving cat and the always obnoxious Odie. I remember watching this television special each year following ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas.’ Charlie Brown will get an honorable mention on my list, but for some reason I don’t remember as many laughs as I do with Garfield and his friends. During the special, Garfield finds himself visiting Jon’s family on the old family farm. During the visit, Garfield learns a lot about Jon’s family as well as learning to understand the true meaning of Christmas. He even learns to love Odie in the process! I can’t wait to watch this one again this year.

4). How the Grinch Stole Christmas! – Nothing will ever compare to the original animated ‘Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas!’ Sure, Jim Carrey gave it a whirl, and did a fairly decent job, but it just wasn’t the same as that slithery green animated creature who sews antlers on his dog and tries stealing Christmas from Cindy Lou Who and the rest of those in Whoville. Who knew that the Grinch’s heart would grow three sizes … not even the Whos knew. The score of this special also produced the classic, ‘You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch’ which happens to be my holiday ringtone for my husband!

5). Mickey’s Christmas Carol – I think this one is fairly self explanatory. Mickey Mouse + a cartoon adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic of ‘A Christmas Carol’ = Christmas fun for the entire family!

Honorable Mention: A Charlie Brown Christmas, Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Bugs Bunny’s Looney Christmas Tales and He-Man and She-Ra: A Christmas Special

12 Smart & Savvy Days of Christmas - Day 7 - Guest Post from Erika Marks

Welcome, welcome! Today the lovely Erika Marks is stopping by and she's got a yummy eggnog recipe to share. Welcome Erika!

Confessions of an Egg Nog Junkie

In our house, the holidays mean a lot of things—all good, all festive, and always, all delicious.

We are an unabashed family of foodies. My husband is a native New Orleanian and an amazing cook, and I am a native New Englander, who also is crazy for cooking—so when it comes time to ring in the holidays—from Thanksgiving to New Year’s—we do it up.

Over the years, lots of recipes have come and gone (don’t get me started on the icebox pie I finally tried for this year’s Thanksgiving that puddled as soon as I took off its spring-form fence) but there are few that are tried and true and that are always welcome at the table—or wherever you choose to consume edibles and drinkables. (Or, if you are Beck and Marley, the couple in my holiday novella A VERY MARRIED CHRISTMAS, who find themselves stranded together on Christmas Eve on a deserted island and forced to make a feast with just the contents of a welcome basket, then you make do!)

But in our house, at the top of this list of (adult) must-haves, would be Our Favorite Homemade Nog.

Now friends, I’m not talking about the store stuff—which is awesome in a pinch (and perfect for the kiddos!) And I’m not talking about the light recipes where you replace the heavy cream with skim milk. I’m talking the REAL DEAL. Because when the holidays call in our home, all bets are off. We say, go big or go home!

Like so many favored recipes, this one came from my mom, though I’m not sure where she got it from. So if you are so inclined to indulge—and why wouldn’t you at this time of year?—here is a quick run-down of what you will need:

6 eggs, separated (save the egg whites for later)
1 cup sugar
3 cups whole milk
1 cup heavy cream
1 cup of brandy
¾ tsp salt

1. Separate 6 eggs (save the egg whites for later) and beat the yolks
2. Gradually beat in 1 cup of sugar
3. Gradually beat in: 3 cups of milk, 1 cup of heavy cream, 1 cup of brandy and 3/4 tsp salt
4. Beat egg whites until stiff; serve egg nog and top with a scoop of the egg whites, sprinkle with nutmeg, if desired.

And viola! A cupful of bliss with a dollop of snowy egg whites to toast the season with. (And if you have leftovers—we rarely do!—but if you do, it can make for some amazing French toast batter for the grown-ups!)

Wishing you and yours a magical season of peace and joy—and much, much sweetness!

On the long and winding road to publishing, Erika Marks worked as an illustrator, an art director, a carpenter and a cake decorator. She now lives and writes in North Carolina with her family where she is currently working on her next coastal romance!
