Blog Tour & Review w/ Character Interview - INSPIRE by Cora Carmack

You guys! You have no idea how excited I am that INSPIRE is out! I can't even. It's easily one of my most favorite reads this year. Read on for an interview with Kalli and a great giveaway.

InspireKalliope lives with one purpose. To inspire. As an immortal muse, she doesn’t have any other choice. It’s part of how she was made. Musicians, artists, actors—they use her to advance their art, and she uses them to survive. She moves from one artist to the next, never staying long enough to get attached. But all she wants is a different life— a normal one. She’s spent thousands of years living lie after lie, and now she’s ready for something real. Sweet, sexy, and steady, Wilder Bell feels more real than anything else in her long existence. And most importantly… he’s not an artist. He doesn’t want her for her ability. But she can’t turn off the way she influences people, not even to save a man she might love. Because in small doses, she can help make something beautiful, but her ability has just as much capacity to destroy as it does to create. The longer she stays, the more obsessed Wilder will become. It’s happened before, and it never turns out well for the mortal. Her presence may inspire genius. But it breeds madness, too.

 I was lucky enough to be given the chance to interview Kalli and talk to her a little about her life as a muse, Wilder and more.

~~~~~
Stephanie: Hi Kalli! Thanks for joining me today.
Kalli: Hello! Thank you for having me!
Stephanie: How does it work, being a muse? How do you share your gift with the people inspire?
Kalli: Being a muse is 10 % about the art, and 90% about surviving. I was born with a gift. It allows me to inspire mortals, literally opening them up to their own untapped creativity and potential. The part that makes that gift feel like a curse is what comes when I open up a mortal too much. The mind works the way it does for a reason. And if a person crosses too many lines too often, it can have detrimental effects on their emotional and mental well being. So, I never stay with any one artist for long. When I feel like one has reached his or her limit, I move on to the next. And I have to move on because the artists aren’t the only ones who can be damaged by my ability. I can too. The energy keeps building in me, regardless of whether or not I expel it with an artist. If I let it build too long, it’s my emotions and thoughts on which that gift wreaks havoc. As for how I share it… it’s a little hard to explain because it’s always been like second nature to me. Almost like breathing. Except I can do it through my lungs and through every tiny pore on my skin. I don’t have to touch a person to influence them, but touch is generally quicker and more potent. I’ve been at it long enough too that I can usually control exactly how I release the energy and in what quantities.
Stephanie: If you weren't a muse, what would you want to do with your life?
Kalli: You ask dangerous questions. You’d think with how long I’ve lived that I’d have an easy answer for something like this, but I don’t. I am a muse. It’s more than just a career or a hobby for me. It’s how I’m made. It’s who I am. In theory, I’d probably still be involved in the arts in some way because it’s what I know and where my talents lie, but if I weren’t a muse… who’s to say that I would still have any of those talents? I might lose my ability to hold a tune, my eye for fine art, the imagination to shape thoughts into something physical. Would my personality be the same? Would I still have the same confidence with people? It’s a scary thing to think about. But I do think about it. Just… without answers.
Stephanie: You've inspired so many people throughout time, but I want to know who inspires you?
Kalli: I think… mothers inspire me. Fathers, too. I have parents of my own, but in the world I come from… family doesn’t hold the same meaning that it holds for mortals. To see someone—mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters—to see them sacrifice and move mountains for those they love. That’s powerful. Unselfish love. There’s definitely something to be inspired by in that.
Stephanie: What is it about Wilder that draws you to him? What are your favorite things about him?
Kalli: What doesn’t draw me to Wilder? He is definitely a master of unselfish love. The way he cares about his family, it was the very first thing I noticed about him. The second thing I noticed was how gorgeous he is. That was probably the third thing I noticed too. And the fourth. When Wilder and I met, he represented everything I had never had. He was steady and caring and real. But at the same time, I couldn’t read him. And when you’ve lived as long as I have, that kind of mystery definitely makes someone stand out.
Stephanie: If you had to pick just one song to describe your life, what would it be?
Kalli: Probably either Timeless by Kate Havnevik or All My Days by Alexi Murdoch
Stephanie: What three words would you use to describe:
Yourself?
Kalli: Longing. Afraid. And… and selfish.
Your life as a muse?
Kalli: Blessed. Cursed. Stagnant.
Wilder?
Kalli: Perfect. I don’t need three words. That one will do.
Stephanie: Thank you again, Kalli for taking the time to sit down with me and sharing a little about yourself.
Kalli: You’re welcome. And thank you for caring.
~~~~~
A big THANK YOU to Brooke and Misha for helping me out with the interview questions. <3

So, if you've followed me for any length of time, you know it's very rare that I read/review paranormal books. But when one of your favorite authors announces that they are releasing a paranormal romance involving Greek Mythology, which I like, there's not much you can do except add it to the top of your reading list. And that's exactly what I did when Cora announced that she was releasing INSPIRE.

INSPIRE is the story of Kalli, an immortal Greek muse who is destined to live a solitary life alone, inspiring the creative juices of those in the arts. Then she meets Wilder. She is drawn to him in a way that she's never been before. Now she must decide whether or not to risk being with him or letting him go.

I really can't even begin to describe how much I loved this story, these characters and everything in between. INSPIRE took me on a roller coaster of emotions that left me reeling. Cora blended the new adult contemporary and paranormal genres perfectly. There isn't much more I can say without giving anything away. If you're a fan of Cora, new adult or paranormal romance, I would definitely urge you to pick up INSPIRE. You won't regret it!

A REAPER MADE – CHAPTER 1
The old woman in the hospital bed took in a ragged sigh that sounded like a struggle. She looked around the room, to the bouquet of wildflowers that sat in a plastic jar at the foot of her bed. Then her watery blue eyes focused in on me, sitting in the chair next to her. I sat up, leaned in to take her wrinkled hand in my smooth one.
“Who are you?” she asked, her tone fearful.
“I think you already know the answer to that, Anna,” I said, keeping my voice low and smooth. No need to further frighten them before they passed on.
“An angel?”
I shook my head, a curtain of dark hair swaying with the motion. She swallowed hard.
“You’re Death.”
“Not quite. More like an escort.”
“A R-reaper.”
Many humans knew us by name, but it still surprised me when they came out and said it. I nodded, a slow movement to prevent her from panicking. Everyone feared dying. It was my job to help them transition.
Anna looked to the closed door and back to me. “You…can anyone else see you?”
“When I want them to, yes. Right now, however, it’s just you and me.”
The old woman blinked hard and when she opened them again, a single tear streaked down her cheek. I gave her hand a reassuring squeeze.
“Anna, it’s all right. You’re moving on.”
“To where?”
I shook my head. “I can’t answer that. No one can. You must discover it for yourself.”
Anna withdrew her trembling hand from mine, put it over her heart. “I don’t know if I’m ready.”
“I wouldn’t be here if you weren’t.”
“What about my family? My daughter, my grandchildren? Can I say goodbye?”
“You saw them this morning, don’t you remember?”
Confusion crossed her face. Anna had been struggling with dementia in addition to her illness, but I knew to be patient. It was in the job description. When she still didn’t speak, I prodded a little.
“Anna, it’s time.”
She gave me another scared look. “Will it hurt?”
“No,” I assured her. “All you need to do is close your eyes and relax.”
Anna appeared to consider her options, her grip tightening on the thin sheets. She sucked in a deep breath, wincing at the rattle in her lungs. Then she steeled herself, looked at me and nodded. “Okay. I’m ready.”
I gave her a warm smile and put my hands on hers. “Close your eyes.”
She did as instructed, the scared look on her face fading as she relaxed into the bed. I sent warmth from my hands to hers, waited for her soul to disengage from her physical body. After maybe ten seconds, I felt a shift in Anna. A sigh escaped her, the air leaving her withering lungs and decaying body. Keeping my hands on hers, I stood and waited.
Then Anna’s spirit came forward, her hand in mine as she lifted herself from the physical plane. Without problem, Anna stood tall next to me, looking younger than she had in years. Her body may have been old and weathered, but her soul, as like most others, appeared younger, vibrant. Most of the older souls, once out of the body that held them back, were happy to feel alive again. It was one of my favorite things about the job, to see the light shine in their eyes after years of aging and physical pain.
Anna gripped my hand, looked back to her body lying peacefully on the bed. She gave me a relieved look. “You were right, that didn’t hurt at all.”
“I’m glad,” I told her with a smile. “Do you want to say goodbye?”
“To that old thing?” she said, waving her hand at her wrinkled body. “I suppose I should, but now that I’m out, all I can think about is the next step.”
“Not unusual,” I said, the corners of my mouth turning upward. Now that Anna was free, the spunk she’d had in her youth returned. I motioned my head towards the door. “Come. Walk with me.”
She didn’t let go of my hand as we walked through the door and out into the hallway. No one so much as blinked at us as we wandered. At first, Anna tried to skirt around obstacles and people, before she realized she went right through them. Before we’d even reached the end of the hallway, she was practically skipping.
“I haven’t felt this good in years,” she said. “Do you think I’ll reunite with my husband?”
“I can’t answer that for certain, but he’ll know you’re coming. He’ll find you if he can.”
“He used to say he’d follow me anywhere. I’ve missed him so much.” She smiled at the memory, then paused as though realizing something. She turned to me. “What is your name?”
“Grace.”
“Grace,” she repeated. “Thank you.”
“It’s my pleasure. Would you like to continue walking or do you think you’re ready?”
Anxiety flashed across Anna’s face before she swallowed hard and nodded. “I think…I think I’m ready to go.”
I squeezed her hand. “May you find peace in your afterlife.”
A warm breeze swept through the hallway, though the living continued as though nothing were happening. The wind found us, circled around and played with my and Anna’s hair. I let go of her hand and took a step back as Anna looked around.
“Am I supposed to walk into the light?” she asked.
I couldn’t help but smile at the question; it seemed like everyone always asked. I shook my head. “There are no bright lights. It’s okay – take a deep breath and be patient.”
Souls didn’t need to breathe, but I always saw them do it before they moved on. It seemed to calm them down as it would’ve had they been in their human bodies. Old habits died hard, I supposed, but if that helped them feel better, I saw no need to point it out.
The breeze picked up, turned into an unseen tornado that swirled around Anna. Her hair went in every direction but her posture stayed still. As she closed her eyes, I saw a smile grow on her face. Then the wind took her, and Anna’s soul faded away in front of my eyes. Warmth grew in my chest, as it usually did with each peaceful passing, and I smiled briefly before turning back into the retirement home to find the next soul.

I am a slut. No worries. I've come to terms with it, and you will too. I’m not one of those girls who thinks she’s too plain, too fat, too skinny, too shy … no, I don’t have that kind of luck. I’m the girl who knows she’s just right for everyone.— Denver

A reputation as Montana State’s favorite manwhore–with–a–heart–of–gold tends to precede me. But, I don’t do girls with issues, that is until this girl. It's this girl I want to fix. This girl I want to protect. And maybe … more. — Ransom

Being in love with the same girl your entire life isn't all it's cracked up to be. She uses me in every way imaginable. How does she see me? I am her perpetual one-night stand. No strings, no attachments. Just mind-numbing sex ... for her anyway. — Greer

Feeling like the life is being choked out of her in the small town of Anaconda, Montana, Denver Dempsey craves the escape that college offers … even if that means leaving her “best friend with benefits” and looking for a new way to forget. Thinking she's found the perfect hookup in Ransom, Denver's outlook on college is bright. That is, until Greer shows up looking for a second chance, and Ransom's interest turns to hatred.

Love. Hate. Triangle.

Who's using who?

Shut Up, and Kiss Me

After a few minutes, Greer stretches out beside me and searches for my hand. Only his hand touches mine, but my whole being tingles. He threads his fingers through mine and runs his thumb over my palm. Something in me twists and splinters, shooting chills all through my body. My breath hitches in my throat because I can’t breathe around the knot that has formed there.

“You feel it too,” he says simply.

I close my eyes tighter, suddenly embarrassed by the fact that I’m not slick. “Yes,” I admit in a whisper.

“Look at me, Denver.”

Turning my head to the side, I open my eyes to find his blue-eyed gaze roaming over me. His eyes find mine, and we just take each other in. I want to say something, but I can’t think of one darn thing that sounds intelligent or even … sexy. Do I even want to be sexy for him? Yes. Yes, I do. I see stupid girls flirt with him all the time. I don’t want to be that girl, but I do want him to see me as a girl and not just his friend. Ironic, since I’ve spent my whole life telling him not to treat me like a girl.

“I want to kiss you so bad … but if I kiss you, it will change everything,” he says in that gravelly voice.

“Change is good,” I whisper.

Rolling to his side, his mouth is centimeters from mine. I can’t make myself move although I’m aching with want. But I haven’t been kissed—ever. And I haven’t kissed anyone since that time on the monkey bars in seventh grade when I stuck my tongue in Brian Thomas’s mouth on a bet. I shocked the shit out of him, and he didn’t even kiss me back. When the bell rang, he jerked back and hit his head hard, sending him to the nurse for the rest of the afternoon. Not my finest moment.

“I don’t want to lose my best friend,” he tells me.

I bring up my other hand and run it over his jaw. “You’re not going to lose me. No matter what. We’ll still be friends.”

“Relationships ruin friendships. We’ve seen enough of that.”

I shiver with that truth. “True. But we’re different. We’ve been together since before we were born. I can’t live without you, so I won’t hurt our friendship.”

Bringing our entwined hands up, he kisses my knuckles. “Me either. We’ll take it slow, all right?”

“All right, my golden boy,” I whisper.

The effect of my words is instantaneous; the blue in his eyes intensifies to boiling. He leans in, his lips brushing mine softly. “Denver,” he whispers against me. “I’ve always wanted to make you mine. Ever since I understood what that meant. I’ve never seen anyone but you.” And even though his eyes burn with passion, I hear a little tremor in his voice. Now, him always putting off those girls makes a whole lot more sense.

“I thought we were taking it slow,” I chastise, but I delight in knowing that he feels something more for me.

“I just want you to know that I don’t take this lightly. You’re the most important person in my universe. And I’ll do anything to protect us.”

His declaration unleashes a torrent of need in me, and I no longer want him to kiss me—I need him to kiss me. “Greer, will you shut up and kiss me, please?”

A matter of love . . .

As much as they try to keep it platonic, the friction between them sparks an irresistible heat that soon consumes them. Can Kash keep Rachel's heart and her life safe even as he risks his own? Will she be able to forgive his lies . . . or will she run when she discovers the dangerous truth?

"Auld Lang Syne" is traditionally sung at the conclusion of New Year gatherings in Scotland and around the world, especially in English-speaking countries.

It is common practice that everyone joins hands with the person next to them to form a great circle around the dance floor. At the beginning of the last verse, everyone crosses their arms across their breast, so that the right hand reaches out to the neighbour on the left and vice versa. When the tune ends, everyone rushes to the middle, while still holding hands. When the circle is re-established, everyone turns under the arms to end up facing outwards with hands still joined.

In countries other than Scotland the hands are often crossed from the beginning of the song at variance with Scottish custom. The Scottish practice was demonstrated by the Queen at the Millennium Dome celebrations for the year 2000. The English press berated her for not "properly" crossing her arms, unaware that she was correctly following the Scottish tradition.

What was your favorite moment of 2013?
